A hiking we will go!

Back in April, I went on a hike at Scott’s Run Nature Preserve, which is right next door to Great Falls National Park.  According to the trail map, we were supposed to hike down an easy embankment to the Potomac River.  Instead we followed a trail that led to a steep rocky cliff overlooking the river.  Needless to say, we never made it down to the Potomac River.  This place always floods after heavy rains so maybe the trail washed away that day…or maybe Aunt Kwyn can’t follow a map to save her life. 😉

Come on slow pokes! Follow me!!

I see the river behind the trees but who will lower me down the cliff? I should’ve taken rock climbing lessons.

Now fast forward three months later.  I went on a hike at Great Falls National Park today.  Guess what?  We found an easy trail to the Potomac River!  Our path led to a boat put-in/take-out area so access to the river was a hop, skip and a jump away.  It was hot and humid outside so the cool water was very refreshing.

Today was another day of Luke’s Adventures.  If you will excuse me, I had a long day and I need to go to sleep now.  Zzzzzzzzz.

It’s gettin’ hot in here. So take off all your clothes. I’m gettin’ so hot I wanna take my clothes off. (btw, for those not hip, this is a song by Nelly)

July 4th weekend

I celebrated Independence Day at Stone Tower Winery in Leesburg last Friday.  I went with Aunt Kwyn and we met up with Aunt Kim and her mom.  The weather was gorgeous in the high 70s after a week of oppressive heat and humidity.  The winery allows friendly dogs inside the tasting room so yours truly was hamming it up.  Just about everybody pet me then came around and pet me again.  I was too cute in my Under Armour shirt.  What can I say?  I’m a fashion victim. 😉

Aunt Kim! What are you doing waaay down there? Come back!!

I’m keeping my eyes on her in case she falls into the pond. Where’s Waldo?  Er, Aunt Kim?

Okay ADD kicking in. Let’s head back to our table so we can eat more treats.

On Saturday, I went to the dog beach with my dog peeps (Lita and Riley) and human peeps (mommy, Aunt Kwyn, Cousin Dave, Cousin Amy and Keli).  We had a blast and played for a few hours.  Again, the weather was gorgeous.  The Chesapeake Bay was a little choppy because Hurricane Arthur passed by a day earlier, but I had on my trusty PFD (personal flotation device) so I was able to play in the water without getting tired (or inadvertently drinking bay water) like the other dogs.  One dog accidentally drank the bay water while playing fetch and threw up his food all over the sand.  EEEEWWWWW!!!!

We took tons of pics at the beach so I’ll share more in the days (or weeks) to come.

I love picnics!

I spent a sunny afternoon hanging out with mommy and aunt Kwyn.  We went to the park for a hike then we had a picnic at a local winery.  We went to Quattro Goomba’s Winery in Aldie, Virginia.  This was the first time any of us visited here so we didn’t know what to expect.

It was crowded!  Everyone had a pitcher of the wine slushie and a couple slices of the homemade Sicilian pizza.  There was a live musician who played really good music.

Surprisingly, the wine slushie was delicious!  It was fruity and the wine was prominent.  This is a very refreshing drink when it’s too hot to drink wine outside.  So we did the same thing as everyone else (monkey see monkey do), we bought wine slushies and pizza.  Then we had a picnic and soaked in the sun.  It was a gorgeous day!  I was a happy boy!

It’s time to visit vineyards!

Spring has sprung and it’s warm enough to sit outside and have a picnic at local vineyards.  That means yours truly gets to tag along at dog friendly vineyards.

Last Friday, I visited Sunset Hills Vineyard in Purcellville, Virgnia.  I was chillin’ on the porch as we listened to live music.  It rained but the sky opened up enough for a nice picture of the sunset.

I hadn’t seen aunt Kim in forever but I recognized her as soon as she got out of her car.  I did my whimpering doggie thing and she was putty in my hands. 😉

Grandma and grandpa have been feeding me too many treats since Christmas and I packed on the winter pounds.  Well, aunt Kim (she’s a veterinarian) confirmed that I was obese.  Now that the weather is nice, I will be doing a lot of hiking so I’ll be back to my normal healthy svelte self sooner than you can snap your fingers. 😀

Have a happy Easter and Passover everyone.  Until next time!

Dog park in Shirlington

I checked out a new dog park in Shirlington, Virginia.  It was nice.  Tons of dogs to play with! 😀

Sky Meadows State Park

I went on a hike at Sky Meadows State Park in Markham, Virginia.  It was so much fun!  So many dogs took their humans hiking on a sunny yet breezy autumn afternoon.  To add to the excitement, there were also a bunch of cows roaming freely…I forgot how BIG cows are.  The lovely cows made hiking interesting.  They left cow patty landmines everywhere! ~ Luke

11.10 (2)

That’s one big dog…

11.10 (3)

…oopsie! That’s not a dog, it’s a moo moo cow cow.

Almost there!

Quiet afternoon at the vineyard

I spent a beautiful Monday afternoon at Barrel Oak Winery with Lita.  We had our fun at the dog park earlier that morning so it was Aunt Kwyn and Cousin Amy’s turn to have fun at the vineyard.

The winery is very dog friendly…we were allowed to hang out with humans inside the tasting room.  There was a huge fireplace with crackling wood that reminded me of camping.  After the wine tasting was over, we sat outside and had a picnic.  It was an awesome day!

Forget the wine. Where’s the food?!

New Dog Park!!!!!!!

Lita invited me to go to a dog park she recently discovered in Vint Hill, Virginia.  It’s gorgeous!!!!  We were smack dab in the middle of horse country.  There were real trees and grass there.  We played with a yellow lab until we were pooped out.  Then we went to a dog friendly vineyard…but that’s another blog. 😀

Hemlock Overlook

I hiked a trail at Hemlock Overlook in Clifton, VA this past weekend.  Mommy let me go off leash so I led the way for the 6 mile hike.  I would run about 30 feet ahead then run back to make sure mommy was okay.  So technically, I hiked more than 6 miles.

I was zonked out when we got home.  All I did was sleep the next day.  I can’t wait to go back again!

~ Luke

P.S. I went to the vet clinic for my annual examination a couple days ago.  Guess how much I weigh?  52 pounds of lean muscle.  The vet was impressed with my shiny coat and white teeth.  What can I say?  I look GOOD. 😉

My name is Luke. I will be your trail guide for today.

Staycation Day 3

On Sunday, Lita, mommy Jenny, Aunt Kwyn, Cousin Amy and I went vineyard hopping in Middleburg, VA.  It was a nice spring day, not too hot and not too cool, so we spent the entire day outside.  It was awesome!

The first vineyard we visited recently opened in the fall.  None of us had been there before so it was a huge gamble.  There was live music outside on the patio to keep Aunt Kwyn entertained as she stayed with Lita and me.  Mommy and Cousin Amy (Aunt Kwyn’s guinea pigs) went inside for a wine tasting and came out 15 minutes later…empty handed.  Uh oh.  That meant the wines were not good so we moved on.

Good thing we had a backup plan because Chrysalis Vineyards was right around the corner.  We spent a couple of hours having a picnic there.  Lita and I ate dog treats and the occasional human cracker.  I also chomped away on fresh strawberries.  They were yummy sweet!  Lita, who doesn’t normally eat fruits,  finally succumbed and ate one too.  I heard the strawberries were delicious paired with the Sarah’s Patio White wine.

Our last stop of the day was Barrel Oak Winery.  There were tons of people having a picnic, it felt like the beach sans water.  Just about everyone had a child or a dog with them.  Aunt Kim felt well enough to join us so she met us there.  Reportedly, the Reserve Petit Verdot and Chardonnay were yummy!

The vineyard didn’t close until 8:30p so we stayed for dinner and to watch the sunset.  There was a vendor that sold brick oven pizzas so I had my share of yummy pizza crust.  Lita and I also received a dog biscuit from the winery staff…and I stole a biscuit from a dog next to us who didn’t want his.  Hee hee.

It was an awesome Sunday and I couldn’t imagine anything topping it off.  However, I knew we had BIG plans for Memorial Day Monday…going to the beach!!!!!!  Stay tuned! ~ Luke

Memorial Day Staycation Day 1

Hi everybody!

Thank you for your kind thoughts and well wishes regarding my great uncle’s passing.  Mommy and Aunt Kwyn decided on having a jammed packed staycation to cheer us all up.  Our schedule was full of fun things to do from Friday to Monday.

On Friday, we visited Aunt Kim, who was recuperating from surgery.  I was so happy to see her that I squealed like a baby piglet.  We made some yummy delicious multi-grain banana and blueberry pancakes for her.  How do I know they were yummy delicious?  Because I’m the official first pancake taster. 😀

Then we stopped by Lake Fairfax Park before heading to Baron Cameron Dog Park.  We were the only ones at Lake Fairfax so I was able to run around off leash…ssshhh, don’t tell anyone. 😉

Our last stop was the dog park.  It was my first time at Baron Cameron and it’s huge compared to my regular dog park.  I had so much fun playing with my new friends because they had the same temperament as me.  It just so happened that most of the dogs were puppies or young dogs.

By the time we picked up dinner and came home for the evening, I was out like a light.  It was an awesome start to a holiday weekend! ~ Luke

5.24.13 027

I’m chillin’ by the pond in Aunt Kim’s neighborhood.

5.24.13 008

I decided not to jump into the stream at Lake Fairfax.  It was chilly outside!

5.24.13 009

Instead, I ran around the park off leash…

5.24.13 015

…and played fetch.

5.24.13 024

Before we left, I explored the playground…

5.24.13 021

…and sat on mommy’s lap while we whooshed down the slide.

5.24.13 046

Dog park! The brown lab was just about the same age and size as me so we had a blast playing with each other.

5.24.13 050

The rottweiler was very nice so we said hello.

5.24.13 051

We played ‘chase Lukey’.

5.24.13 054

I was pooped out so I chilled and let the wind blow my floppy ears up.

Manassas Battlefield Park

I hiked Manassas Battlefield Park a couple weeks ago.  With all the playoff hockey prep, I haven’t had a chance to blog about it until now.

It was a beautiful spring day.  Not too hot.  Not too cool.  Just right.  I saw so many dogs there!  I wanted to play with one so badly, I started running around in circles.

We went to the dog park after the hike so I could have play time with my canine friends.  I know I’m spoiled.  What can I say? 😉 ~ Luke

Paradise Springs Winery

I chilled out at Paradise Springs Winery this past Friday.  First, I walked around historic Clifton with Aunt Kwyn, her friend Aunt Kim and Aunt Kim’s dad.

Aunt Kim (she’s a vet) hadn’t seen me in a couple of months.  She said I looked great… healthy and svelte.  I lost all my winter and holiday pudge! 😀  She rewarded me with a singular french fry…woo hoo!  My Jedi mind control worked! 😉

Afterwards, we hung out at the winery and had a picnic outside until the sun set.  I was on a tie out that Aunt Kim bought me for Christmas so it gave me the freedom to play with other dogs, albeit running around in circles.  At least I wasn’t on a leash like them…ha ha.

This is the second winery that I’ve visited in my entire life.  I’m sure I will be visiting  a lot more now that the weather is nice.

By the way, I’ve been told that all the wines at Paradise Springs Winery are really good.  So if you’re a wine aficionado and in the Washington, D.C. area, check them out! ~ Luke
