A hiking we will go!

Back in April, I went on a hike at Scott’s Run Nature Preserve, which is right next door to Great Falls National Park.  According to the trail map, we were supposed to hike down an easy embankment to the Potomac River.  Instead we followed a trail that led to a steep rocky cliff overlooking the river.  Needless to say, we never made it down to the Potomac River.  This place always floods after heavy rains so maybe the trail washed away that day…or maybe Aunt Kwyn can’t follow a map to save her life. 😉

I see the river behind the trees but who will lower me down the cliff? I should’ve taken rock climbing lessons.

Now fast forward three months later.  I went on a hike at Great Falls National Park today.  Guess what?  We found an easy trail to the Potomac River!  Our path led to a boat put-in/take-out area so access to the river was a hop, skip and a jump away.  It was hot and humid outside so the cool water was very refreshing.

Today was another day of Luke’s Adventures.  If you will excuse me, I had a long day and I need to go to sleep now.  Zzzzzzzzz.

It’s gettin’ hot in here. So take off all your clothes. I’m gettin’ so hot I wanna take my clothes off. (btw, for those not hip, this is a song by Nelly)

Do my eyes fool me? I see water down yonder!!

Oh. This is a pleasant trickle of water flowing downstream.

This is more like it! Hey dude! Mind if I join you?

Sky Meadows State Park

I went on a hike at Sky Meadows State Park in Markham, Virginia.  It was so much fun!  So many dogs took their humans hiking on a sunny yet breezy autumn afternoon.  To add to the excitement, there were also a bunch of cows roaming freely…I forgot how BIG cows are.  The lovely cows made hiking interesting.  They left cow patty landmines everywhere! ~ Luke

That’s one big dog…

11.10 (3)

…oopsie! That’s not a dog, it’s a moo moo cow cow.

Nice clear sunny day with gorgeous views.

Almost there!

Hemlock Overlook

I hiked a trail at Hemlock Overlook in Clifton, VA this past weekend.  Mommy let me go off leash so I led the way for the 6 mile hike.  I would run about 30 feet ahead then run back to make sure mommy was okay.  So technically, I hiked more than 6 miles.

I was zonked out when we got home.  All I did was sleep the next day.  I can’t wait to go back again!

~ Luke

P.S. I went to the vet clinic for my annual examination a couple days ago.  Guess how much I weigh?  52 pounds of lean muscle.  The vet was impressed with my shiny coat and white teeth.  What can I say?  I look GOOD. 😉

My name is Luke. I will be your trail guide for today.

Manassas Battlefield Park

I hiked Manassas Battlefield Park a couple weeks ago.  With all the playoff hockey prep, I haven’t had a chance to blog about it until now.

It was a beautiful spring day.  Not too hot.  Not too cool.  Just right.  I saw so many dogs there!  I wanted to play with one so badly, I started running around in circles.

We went to the dog park after the hike so I could have play time with my canine friends.  I know I’m spoiled.  What can I say? 😉 ~ Luke

Bull Run Mountain Part 2

Our goal was accomplished when we made it to High Point Overlook!  We saw lots of farm land and the Blue Ridge Mountains down yonder.  Riley, Lita and I patiently waited as the rest of our pack ogled the view and took a million pics of themselves doing silly poses.  I must admit I was a little intimidated when mommy and I posed for pics by the edge of the rocks.  It was a straight drop down, full of big rocks and trees!

We had an easy hike down the mountain and back to our cars before heading our separate ways.  I still had tons of energy and wanted to play with Lita and Riley but they had to go.  Mommy, Aunt Kwyn, Aunt Laura and I remained so we could explore the historical ruins of Chapman’s Beverly Mill (www.chapmansmill.org).  All in all, it was a fantastic Sunday!

The good news is, Bull Run Mountain is literally 15 minutes from my house.  We’ll definitely do this hike often…especially since two dog friendly vineyards, LaGrange Winery and Pearmund Cellars, are right around the corner (incentive for wine drinkers to hike and drink afterward).

Until next time! ~ Luke

Bull Run Mountain Part 1

Lita, Riley and I hiked Bull Run Mountain on Sunday.  We were a big pack…mommy Jenny, Aunt Kwyn (my ghostwriter), Aunt Laura (mommy’s best friend), Cousin Dave (Lita’s poppa) and Kellie (Riley’s mommy) joined us.  It was quite a journey with a couple of steep inclines up a rocky path.  We hiked about 2.5 miles up to the overlook then back down for a total of about 5 miles.

I HAD TO BE THE LEADER so Aunt Laura ran with me ahead of everyone, only to stop when I couldn’t see mommy anymore.  Then we ran back to everyone so I could make sure the rest of the pack was safe.  So Aunt Laura and I probably did a 6 mile hike.  Thanks Aunt Laura!  You rock! 😀

We saw a stream along the trail so Riley was excited to see water.  She jumped in immediately.  Since Riley jumped into the water, I followed her, because you know, monkey see, monkey do.  Lita didn’t want anything to do with getting wet so she watched us from dry land.  It was a nice cool dip in the water to begin our journey.

This is the end of Part 1 of my blog.  Stay tuned for Part 2.  Enjoy the pics! ~ Luke

Let’s get our feet wet before we dive in, okay?

Lita says, “This is as far as I go. Continue on, you crazy wet labs!”

4.7.13 007

Holy Cow!!!  Riley, why didn’t you tell me the water was deep?!

4.7.13 008

Oh my gosh.  Oh my gosh.  Oh my gosh.  Land!!!!

4.7.13 013

Where are you going Riley?!

4.7.13 014

I think we should join Lita back on land.

7 months old, baby!

Hi everyone!

Here is an update on yours truly. 🙂  I am 7 months old and weigh 50 pounds.  I am the perfect sized dog, big enough to wrestle with and small enough to cuddle on the couch with.  Those days of making oopsies in the house are long gone but I do have a tendency of digging in the waste basket to shred paper.

I am still co-dependent but I can keep myself busy playing with all my toys.  I do this adorable baby whimper/happy cry when family comes home.  I usually bring a toy…ummm…shoe, to said family member as I whimper.  Sometimes I change it up and lay on my back while whimpering.  I like to keep them on their toes!

Everyone says I don’t have a mean bone in my body.  I’ve been called lover boy many times.  What can I say, I LOVE to give kisses.

However, I am a very good judge of character and will growl at nefarious people.  I am becoming a very good guard dog.  I protect the house from items blowing in the wind…oh, and unwanted visitors too. 😉

I am one of those weird dogs who loves crispy green beans (quickly blanched).  I will give paw to shake hands over and over again for a green bean!  I also love homemade dehydrated sweet potato chews…they just take forever to make though!  When I see someone peeling a banana, I expect to take the first bite and the last bite.  No joke.

Don’t let my favorite healthy treats fool you.  They are given to keep me svelte because I am a chowhound!!!!  I will eat anything…anywhere…anytime!!!!  If you leave food on the kitchen counter, consider it safe in my tummy.

My ghostwriter notified me that she will be out of town next week so I won’t post a blog for a while.  In the mean time, I’d like to share pics of a typical week of Luke’s adventures.  Until next time! ~ Luke

Play date with Harper, a labradoodle.  He’s a couple months older than me but we’re the same size.  We had so much fun chasing each other around the house and wrecking havoc!
