Playing in the rain

It’s wet and chilly outside.  But my coat keeps me warm and dry.  What to do on a dreary day?  PLAY PLAY PLAY!!!!! 😀

~ Luke

10.10.13c

Let’s go this way. There’s a big puddle up ahead that I want to jump into.

10.10.13d

But first thing first. I must grab a stick and play fetch.

10.10.13e

Now let’s run over to the puddle!!

10.10.13f

Wait! What’s that sound?! It’s the delivery truck!

10.10.13g

GGGRRRRR. I must run back home to guard the house from the UPS man!

Sizzling at the dog beach

It’s been hot in the Washington D.C. area.  The temperature has been averaging 95 degrees Fahrenheit, with a heat index of over 100 degrees this past week.  So heading to the beach was an awesome way to cool off!

Unfortunately, our patience was tested as we sat in the car, stuck in traffic.  It took one hour to drive 5 miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Toll Plaza to Kent Island…ARGH!!!!!!!!!  Thank goodness we weren’t heading to the Delaware beaches or Ocean City, Maryland, because it would have been a longer ride.

However, the wait was worth it!  Matapeake Beach was awesome!  We set up our beach towels and picnic blanket near the shade by the trees so Lita and I could cool down away from the sun.

The water was warm but it was also deeper and choppier than the last time we went.  I wore my Big Eddy Float Coat the entire time and showed everyone my swimming abilities.  I swam and swam and swam and swam!  I even dunked my head in the water several times in order to retrieve my tennis ball and frisbee.

We stayed for more than 2 hours before heading to a seafood restaurant for dinner.  Lots of pics were taken so I’ll share them in future blogs.  I hope everyone is staying cool!

~ Luke

7.6.13 005

The water was deep.  I was doggy paddling until my feet could touch the ground.

7.6.13 006

Then I hippity hopped back onto shore.

7.6.13 004

Only to repeat another game of fetch.

7.6.13 085

Lita did not want to play in the water because the waves were too choppy for her comfort.

7.6.13 079

She begrudgingly got in the water because her mommy wanted to cool her down so she wouldn’t overheat.

My early bday present

Guess what everyone?!  My first birthday is in 3 days!!!!  That didn’t stop me from receiving a really cool early birthday present on Memorial Day…a Ruffwear Big Eddy Float Coat!  Although the water at Matapeake Beach was mostly too shallow for a life jacket, I was very comfortable playing with it on.  That’s good to know because the next time I go somewhere with deep water, I will make sure I’m wearing my sporty red life jacket.  I really like the design of the Big Eddy because it fits securely on me yet allows freedom to play around.

Here’s an interesting story.  My friend Riley knows how to swim but I haven’t really been tested yet.  At one point, she and I chased a ball thrown extremely far out into the Chesapeake Bay.  Thank goodness I still had on my life jacket because we were in deep water.  I would have freaked out without it!!!!!

However, since I was wearing my life jacket, I calmly swam back to more shallow water before I hippity hopped back onto shore.  I felt so safe with my life jacket that I chased another ball waaaay out there in the deep water!  Awesome, yeah?! ~ Luke

DSC_0272

I dared Lita to go into the water and fetch the ball. She did!!!  Unfortunately she got water up her nose and felt sick for a little bit.

DSC_0295

Before I could get to the ball, Riley took it!!

5.27.13 048

Lita was such a trooper!  After she felt better, she went back into the water to play some more.

5.27.13 050

Lita was a smart girl.  She wanted no part of fetching the ball in the water.  She said water up her nose did not feel good.

5.27.13 051

Lita let Riley and me do all the fetching.

Look!  I’m swimming!!!!   I’m really far out there with Riley.

Darn!  Riley fetched the ball while I was distracted playing with Lita!

Staycation Day 4

May 27, 2013, Memorial Day, was the most fun I’ve ever had in my young life…and I’ve had MANY adventures already.  I went to the beach for the first time!!!!!!!!

Mommy, Aunt Kwyn, Cousin Amy, Cousin Dave, Lita, Riley’s mommy Kellie, and Riley went too.  We went to Matapeake State Park, which has an off leash dog park at the end of the beach.  It’s on Kent Island by the Bay Bridge in Maryland, about 1.5 hours from my house.

We had so much fun playing in the Chesapeake Bay as well as running around the beach.  At first, Lita, Riley and I had the beach all to ourselves.  Later that afternoon, more dogs showed up and we had a blast playing with them.

Soooo many pics were taken, I decided to split them up into separate blogs.  Enjoy!  I know I did! 😀 ~ Luke

I LOVE fetching sticks!

Riley does too.

Memorial Day Staycation Day 1

Hi everybody!

Thank you for your kind thoughts and well wishes regarding my great uncle’s passing.  Mommy and Aunt Kwyn decided on having a jammed packed staycation to cheer us all up.  Our schedule was full of fun things to do from Friday to Monday.

On Friday, we visited Aunt Kim, who was recuperating from surgery.  I was so happy to see her that I squealed like a baby piglet.  We made some yummy delicious multi-grain banana and blueberry pancakes for her.  How do I know they were yummy delicious?  Because I’m the official first pancake taster. 😀

Then we stopped by Lake Fairfax Park before heading to Baron Cameron Dog Park.  We were the only ones at Lake Fairfax so I was able to run around off leash…ssshhh, don’t tell anyone. 😉

Our last stop was the dog park.  It was my first time at Baron Cameron and it’s huge compared to my regular dog park.  I had so much fun playing with my new friends because they had the same temperament as me.  It just so happened that most of the dogs were puppies or young dogs.

By the time we picked up dinner and came home for the evening, I was out like a light.  It was an awesome start to a holiday weekend! ~ Luke

5.24.13 027

I’m chillin’ by the pond in Aunt Kim’s neighborhood.

5.24.13 008

I decided not to jump into the stream at Lake Fairfax.  It was chilly outside!

5.24.13 009

Instead, I ran around the park off leash…

5.24.13 015

…and played fetch.

5.24.13 024

Before we left, I explored the playground…

5.24.13 021

…and sat on mommy’s lap while we whooshed down the slide.

5.24.13 046

Dog park! The brown lab was just about the same age and size as me so we had a blast playing with each other.

5.24.13 050

The rottweiler was very nice so we said hello.

5.24.13 051

We played ‘chase Lukey’.

5.24.13 054

I was pooped out so I chilled and let the wind blow my floppy ears up.

Dog Park Part Deux

Hi everybody!

It’s snowing outside but not the light and fluffy kind I like.  It’s heavy and wet so everything is muddy.  So no playing in the snow for me today.

Good thing I stopped by the dog park yesterday for some more fun and excitement.  I’m pooped out!

I met up with Lita and our new friend Riley.  Riley is a black lab so she and I got along instantly.  She’s going to teach me how to swim when the weather gets warmer.  I can’t wait!

As usual, Lita was my bodyguard and she was protective of me.  This is great because I have a tendency of getting into dog’s faces, not because I’m dominant but because I love to give kisses.  Some dogs don’t like this and they try to bite me.  That’s where big momma Lita comes in to keep the peace.

We had a great time playing outside even though it was cold and gloomy.  I wanted everyone to chase me so I zig zagged around the park like Speedy Gonzales…Andele!  Andele!  Arriba!  Arriba! ~ Luke

I got Riley to chase me even though she’s the one with the ball in her mouth.

3.24.13b

New dog!  New dog!

3.24.13i

Another new dog!  May I give you a kiss?  Don’t bite me, okay?

Chillin’ at the dog park

Today was my first dog park experience.  It was a tiny enclosure but it was a clean fenced in area to play off leash with Lita.  A lady with a husky came by but they decided not to come in.  So Lita and I we were the only ones there.  That was fine by us.  Just meant more space for us to play chase!  I can’t wait to come back here again.  Maybe more dogs will show up when it’s warmer outside. ~ Luke

3.22.13e

Come on Lita!  Let’s chase the ball!!!!!

3.22.13c

If you don’t want it, I’ll fetch it.

3.22.13d

You’re not even trying!

3.22.13a

It’s mine, all mine!

3.22.13b

Got it!

3.22.13 005

Go ahead and rest Lita.  I’ll chew on a stick until you’re ready to play again.

Let it snow!!!!

Hot diggity doo, it’s snowing outside!!!!!  My wish finally came true.  Thank you Easter Bunny! 😉

I’ve been playing outside all morning.  Now it’s sleepy time before I head back out for some more fun in the snow. ~ Luke

Woo hoo!  Jump in the air and do the happy dance!  Happy dance, happy dance, happy dance!!!!!!!

I love my coat.   It keeps me dry, warm and toasty.

Let’s play fetch!!

I’m baaaccckkkk!!!!

2.3.13 002

Being away from my blog made me a grumpy old man.

Hi everyone!

Vacation hiatus is over.  Welcome back to a new episode of Luke’s Adventures.

In the past couple weeks while my ghost writer was away, I visited Lita, played fetch outside, celebrated the Superbowl with a peanut butter cookie, and kept myself entertained by destroying 3 pairs of shoes.  I’m still waiting for that elusive first real snow fall of the year though.  Until next time! ~ Luke

1.22.13b

We’re patiently waiting for our Scooby snacks. Hurry up and take the picture already!

1.22.13a

It’s Lita’s toy frog but I’m a brat so it’s MINE!!!!!

2.3.13 007

Where’s Lukie?!

My first visit to the lake

What is this?!  Are your eyes deceiving you?!  Could it be?!  Egad!  It’s Lukie Lukie Loo playing in water!

Guess where I went?  To the lake!!!!  I LOVED it so much I didn’t want to leave.

The water was cold but I had so much fun jumping in, fetching a stick, jumping out, shaking off water, doing a victory dance with the prize in my mouth, chewing the stick for a bit, then starting all over again.  I can’t wait to go back!  ~ Luke

Is that a stick in the water?!?!?!?!

I’m getting closer!

Cowabunga!!!

Yoiks!  The water is too deep!!

Retreat!  Retreat!  Tell the troops to pull back!

Bbbbrrrrrr!!!!!

Shake it off!

Okay, much better.

There’s that elusive stick again!  I’m gonna getcha this time!

Slow and easy wins the race.  Gentle.  Gentle.

Lifting the veil…quarantine is over!

First I’d like to amend yesterday’s blog.  I almost bit off a finger for real!  I was playing fetch outside yesterday and I accidentally grabbed Aunt Kwyn’s finger and chomped down on it instead of the stick.  Sorry.  Are we still friends?  Love you.  Bye bye.

October 15, 2012
Oopsy!  Good thing you bought me aloe. Now you can use it too! Since I received my rabies shot earlier, you won’t be foaming at the mouth and calling yourself Cujo any time soon, right?

Guess what?  I am 17 weeks old and I weigh 32 pounds.  I went to the vet for a follow up yesterday and she recommended that we cut back on my food a tiny bit.  She didn’t call me fat…just wide.  It’s because I’ve got the double whammy of being both a lab and a beagle.  These two breeds are notorious for overeating.  We must be proactive so I can maintain my svelte figure.

Do you hear this Uncle Tony?  You must resist my charm and stay strong because I Scooby Doo you all the time!  Mommy says she loves me just the way I am and it’s okay if I have Shakira/Beyonce hips and a J. Lo booty.  But we will cut down on my food because I want to be healthy.

I received my rabies and bordetella injections yesterday.  Do you know what this means?  Quarantine is over and I can play with dogs that I don’t know!!!  Whooooppeeeee!

I didn’t cry or whimper like last week.  I was a big boy and took it like a man!  I’m also happy to report that I didn’t need Benadryl this time.  No adverse effects.  I’m healthy as a horse.

Something shocking did happen to me at the vet clinic and it had nothing to do with cutting back on my food.  All this time I’ve been loved by sooooo many people, it’s ridiculous.  Well, that changed yesterday.  While I was waiting for Aunt Kwyn to pay the bill, a grumpy old man with a little lap dog yelled at me.  He said I barked too much and I was too loud.  How rude!  I just wanted to play with his dog.  Aunt Kwyn was irritated at him.  She almost set me loose so I could jump on that little dog.  But she was nice.  She pet me and said I was a good boy.  Yes I am!

On to lighter news.  I’m using today’s blog to reminisce on how much I’ve grown since I was a 7 week old and 10 pound baby.  For starters, I tripled my weight.  I may whimper like a baby at times but I don’t bark like one anymore.  I’ve got a strong big boy bark now.  I don’t howl like a beagle all the time but it comes out every once in a while.

I’m very smart and catch on quickly.  I know the difference between the drawer where treats are kept and the drawer where medicine is kept.  If the treat drawer is opened, I sit right there waiting for a Scooby snack.  If the medicine drawer is opened, I immediately run and hide under the chair.

I also learned a lot of new vocabulary.  I know how to sit and stay…but whether or not I obey is a different story. 😉  I know what “no” and “bad boy” means.  My favorites are “who wants yummy,” “go get the ball” and “let’s go for a walk.”  I also understand “who is that?” and “where’s your toy.”  I’m beginning to catch on to “go for a car ride.”  Just imagine how much smarter and well behaved I’ll be when I take obedience classes!

Speaking of car rides, I love sticking my head out the window and having my ears flop!  I need goggles.  It would make a great Christmas present.  Hint.  Hint.  Santa Claus, are you reading this?

August 26, 2012
This is so incredibly cool. I can smell everything!

September 15, 2012
Weee!  Weee!  Weee!  Am I annoying you?

Here’s an interesting story.  Last week I was in the backyard at night.  It was pitch black out there.  I saw something in the dark about 100 feet away so I started growling in case it was Yogi Bear and Boo Boo trying to steal my stash of Scooby Snacks (we live by the Blue Ridge mountains and sometimes bears wander into neighborhoods looking for food).  I acted tough at first and inched towards it.  Then I got scared and panicked.  I sort of hid behind Aunt Kwyn for protection…save the young, sacrifice the old!  Well, she turned on the back light so she could see what I was growling at.  She was prepared to protect us from zombies!  To our surprise, it was a bunny rabbit.  Yep!  A big old frightening looking rascally rabbit.  I believe he called himself Bugs Bunny.  When we walked up closer to him, he hopped away.  I started using my beagle nose and sniffed the area.  I realized rabbits are the ones who manufacture these M&M pellets that I like to eat.  I know.  I know.  Eeeewwww.  Bad boy.  It’s not good for me.  But they’re everywhere!  I’m just trying to help clean up the yard.

I recently discovered that behind these things called blinds, are windows!  Oh my!  What a discovery!  I can see everything and everyone outside now!  What took me so long?  I feel gypped the last couple months.

October 13, 2012
The veil was lifted and I saw enlightenment. My life has changed forever.

I can do this all day! This is so much better than that little window by the front door.

Here’s an idea of how much I’ve grown in the past couple months.  This is me in my medium sized harness back in August.  It was too big on me at first.  I weighed about 13 little baby pup pup pounds.  This was the smallest setting.

August 21, 2012
Doesn’t it look like a patrol belt?

By September, my harness fit just right.  I was a handsome young bloke.  It looked really good on me.  I prefered walking around the neighborhood with my harness because I didn’t choke.

I even know the routine!  Left foot in one loop.  Right foot in other loop.  Don’t bite it!  Click.  Let’s go for a walk.

September 27, 2012
It fits me perfectly! My grandparents say I look like a parachuter when I wear it.

Then October rolled around and someone must have zapped it with a shrinking gun.  The extensions were maxed out and it was getting tighter by the day!

October 8, 2012
This was me in the vet’s office last week. It was the last time I wore my harness. Farewell my friend. You served me well.

Mommy bought me a large sized harness last week.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t fit me yet.  Way too loose.  It makes no sense because it’s the same brand, just one size bigger.  Why wouldn’t they start the setting where the medium size left off?  I’m writing a letter to customer service after I publish this blog.  They need to hear my 2 cents.  It’s been quite unpleasant being leashed up by my collar this week…and it’s ONLY Tuesday!

October 15, 2012
I’m still swimming in my new harness. It’s so big, it falls off when I start running around.

I will remain optimistic and strive for fitting into my harness by the end of the week.  I’ve got things to do this weekend.  Places to go.  Doggies to play with.  Wish me luck! ~ Luke
